Kenatha Kaanom, the late Suresh Sangaiah’s final film, has wrapped up a well-received theatrical run, and Yogi Babu isn’t taking the response for granted.

“This moment brings me great joy, but also sorrow,” the actor said. “Suresh Sangaiah not being here to see this success pains me. But his vision lives on in Kenatha Kaanom. I owe him my gratitude for this opportunity.”

The film opened on March 13 to warm reviews, currently holding a 7.1 on IMDB. It follows residents of a drought-stricken village who, while digging a communal well, unearth prehistoric fossils, triggering government intervention that threatens to displace the community. It’s political satire in the vein of Sangaiah’s earlier Oru Kidayin Karunai Manu and Sathiya Sothanai.

For Yogi Babu, who spent the better part of a decade as Tamil cinema’s default comic relief, Kenatha Kaanom represents something larger. “The encouragement from press and audiences pushed me to go beyond comedy,” he said. “This success motivates me to keep taking on meaningful films.”

Sangaiah passed away before the film reached cinemas, making this both a celebration and a memorial. Nivas K. Prasanna scored the music. JioHotstar has acquired the streaming rights, though a date hasn’t been announced.
