Magudam clears censors with U/A, opens August 14

Magudam is through the censors. Vishal announced the film has been certified U/A, locking in the final stretch: trailer on August 7, worldwide theatrical release on August 14. The certification poster does its own bit of storytelling, putting Vishal in a white suit and full white beard on a carved throne, an aged avatar the campaign has been steadily teasing.

The release carries more weight than a routine date lock. Magudam is Vishal’s first film as director, the project he took over mid-shoot last Diwali while continuing to headline it, so the August 14 opening doubles as the verdict on that gamble. It is also Super Good Films’ 99th production, with Dushara Vijayan and Anjali alongside Vishal in the cast, G.V. Prakash Kumar composing and Richard M. Nathan on camera. The Telugu version goes out as Makutam.

The date puts Magudam in the thick of August’s crowded release calendar, with the Independence Day weekend offering the box-office cushion every big film in the month is chasing. The trailer arrives Thursday; a week later, the film answers for itself.
