August releases: July's backlog arrives all at once

Twelve films across three Fridays, then two across the next two. DC, Magudam, Hi, Vishwanath & Sons, I'm Game and Toxic now stack into four weekends.

July ended thin. Twelve films came out across its first three Fridays and exactly two across the last two, which is not a distribution pattern so much as a room being cleared. Jana Nayagan opened on the 23rd and everything with a choice in the matter stepped aside. Around 130 films have released in Tamil across the first seven months of the year, so the appetite is not the problem. The calendar was.

August is where that backlog lands, and it lands in a heap. The full slate:

August 7: DC, GDN, Photographer
August 14: Hi, Magudam, Vishwanath & Sons
August 20: I’m Game
August 21: Modha Rathiri in theatres, Pyaar Prema Kalyanam straight to streaming
August 26: Toxic

The 7th takes three. DC is the headline, with Lokesh Kanagaraj making his debut as an actor under Arun Matheswaran’s direction, his first since Captain Miller. Anirudh scores it, Wamiqa Gabbi and Sanjana Krishnamoorthy are in the principal cast, and the trailer landed two days ago with the action front and centre. It was supposed to be out in July. Sharing the date is GDN, which ran from Jana Nayagan first and landed next to DC second, a biopic of the Coimbatore inventor GD Naidu written and directed by Krishnakumar Ramakumar. Madhavan takes the title role, with Sathyaraj, Jayaram, Dushara Vijayan, Priyamani, Aditi Balan and Kaniha around him and Govind Vasantha on music. Photographer opens the same day.

The 14th is the crowded one. Magudam is Vishal’s first film as director, pushed from July because the final stretch of work ran long, with GV Prakash on music, Dushara Vijayan and Anjali in the cast, and Vishal reportedly appearing in three different getups. Vishwanath & Sons is Venky Atluri’s follow-up to Lucky Baskhar, with Suriya, Mamitha Baiju, Radikaa and Raveena Tandon, and GV Prakash Kumar scoring that one too. So the composer has two films opening against each other on the same Friday. Hi makes it three: Vishnu Edavan’s first film as director after making his name writing lyrics, trained in Lokesh Kanagaraj’s stable, with Nayanthara and Kavin leading and Jen Martin on music.

Then the month spreads out. I’m Game arrives on the 20th, timed to Onam, with Nahas Hidhayath directing after RDX and a cast of Dulquer Salmaan, Kayadu Lohar, Kathir and Mysskin. It is a gambling story told as an action thriller. Modha Rathiri takes the 21st in theatres, and Pyaar Prema Kalyanam skips cinemas entirely to go straight to streaming the same day.

Toxic closes it on the 26th. Geetu Mohandas directs, Yash leads, KVN produces, and Nayanthara, Rukmini Vasanth and Kiara Advani are in the cast. Nayanthara therefore has two of the month’s biggest openings, twelve days apart. Toxic has been announced and moved twice already. Third date, and this one is a Wednesday.
