Hi! Locks August 14: Nayanthara and Kavin's First Film

Hi!, the film that pairs Nayanthara and Kavin for the first time, has its release date: August 14, a worldwide theatrical opening timed to walk into the Independence Day weekend. The team confirmed it with a promo video rather than a plain poster, which fits a film that has been selling itself on charm from the first still.

Debutant Vishnu Edavan directs, and his pedigree is the quiet hook here. A lyricist by trade, he worked in Lokesh Kanagaraj’s unit on Kaithi, Master and Vikram, three of the most muscular films of the past decade, and has come out the other side wanting to make the opposite thing. “Hi is, true to its name, a simple, sweet film,” he says. “It is built so families can spend two and a quarter hours together and just enjoy themselves. The story plays out across Chennai, Coimbatore and Pollachi. Like Darling Darling Darling, Santhosh Subramaniam or Yaaradi Nee Mohini, this is a family entertainer with no villains at all.”

The supporting bench is deep: K. Bhagyaraj, Prabhu, Radikaa Sarathkumar, VTV Ganesh, Sathyan and Adithya Kathir among others, a lineup that reads like an insurance policy for the film’s comic and emotional stretches. Jen Martin composes, with Rajesh Shukla behind the camera and Philomin Raj editing. Nayanthara produces alongside Vignesh Shivan and S.S. Lalit Kumar, which makes this one of the rare films she has both headlined and backed.

The first single has already done its job, piling up views in the millions and giving the pairing an early public. Kavin arrives with his post-Bloody Beggar momentum intact, while for Nayanthara this sits alongside Mookuthi Amman 2 in a year where she is fronting films across registers. Hi! had already been flagged as one of the Tamil headliners on ZEE5’s upcoming slate, so the film’s afterlife is sorted; the theatrical case gets made on August 14.
