Padayaatra release date: Mammootty and Adoor return December 4
Thirty-two years after Vidheyan, and a decade since the director's last film, the pair that made three Malayalam classics now has a date in theatres.
Mammootty and Adoor Gopalakrishnan’s Padayaatra will release in theatres on December 4. Mammootty announced the date on Wednesday with a new poster of himself, Grace Antony and Indrans, ending a long wait for the first film the two have made together since Vidheyan in 1994.
That gap is 32 years. Before it, the pair made Anantaram, Mathilukal and Vidheyan, a run that sits near the top of anyone’s list of Malayalam cinema’s finest. Vidheyan, in which Mammootty played the brutal landlord Bhaskara Patelar, was one of the two films that won him the National Award for Best Actor that year. Padayaatra is also Adoor’s first film as director in a decade, since Pinneyum in 2016.
The trailer, released in September, sets Mammootty up as a doctor posted to a tribal hamlet who insists on treating his patients for free. In a place unused to generosity, that is enough to make people suspicious, and the film appears to follow what that suspicion turns into. Adoor has written it with K.V. Mohan Kumar.

Indrans, Grace Antony, Jagadish, Alencier Ley Lopez, Sudheer Karamana, Zeenath, Nandu and Sreeshma Chandran are in the cast. Mujeeb Majeed composes the music, Shehnad Jalal is the cinematographer and Praveen Prabhakar edits. Mammootty Kampany, his own banner, produces, its eighth film.

Before December, Mammootty has another stop. He is part of Dhanush’s OM, directed by Rajkumar Periasamy, which is due in theatres on November 20, two weeks before Padayaatra.
