Ramayana advance booking crosses ₹5 crore, two weeks out
Ninety-two thousand tickets gone two weeks out, Bengal has waived the tax, LA gets an October 27 premiere, and Yash wants fans to go easy on the VFX.
Ramayana opened its advance booking on Tuesday, and by Wednesday afternoon it had sold about 92,000 tickets in India worth roughly ₹5.44 crore, according to trade figures. Without block bookings the figure is about ₹3.61 crore. Nitesh Tiwari’s film, with Ranbir Kapoor as Rama, Sai Pallavi as Sita and Yash as Ravana, is still two weeks from release.
Delhi-NCR is leading the rush, with about ₹1.52 crore from 19,913 tickets, followed by Mumbai at ₹1.10 crore, where some recliner seats are reportedly priced at ₹2,770. Almost all of the money so far is in Hindi, about ₹5.15 crore of it. The dubbed Kannada version has made close to ₹28 lakh and the Telugu version a token ₹48,700, though bookings in the southern markets have yet to fully open up.

The film releases worldwide on Thursday, November 5, with previews in India from November 4. It will play in IMAX, and first comes a world premiere on October 27 at the David Geffen Theatre in the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles, an invitation-only screening in 3D. West Bengal has already declared it tax-free, a Dussehra announcement from Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari.
Yash, who also produces the film with Namit Malhotra, used Monday’s pre-release event in Hyderabad to get ahead of the criticism. “Don’t try to find small faults in the film, like the VFX,” he told the crowd. If people like Malhotra were lost after taking a risk this size, he said, it would be years before anyone attempted it again. “So watch Ramayana with an open mind.”

The scale he is defending is not small. This is part one of a two-film adaptation, produced by Prime Focus Studios, DNEG and Yash’s Monster Mind Creations, with music by A.R. Rahman and Hans Zimmer. The cast around the three leads includes Ravi Dubey, Sunny Deol, Kajal Aggarwal, Arun Govil, Lara Dutta and Kunal Kapoor, and Harish Uthaman makes his Hindi debut as Vibhishana. Since the first trailer in July, the makers have added a second, Rise of a Legend, which released last week.
Diwali will not be quiet around it. A day after Ramayana opens, Nayanthara’s Mookuthi Amman 2 and Suriya’s Scene both arrive in theatres, with the goddess film going out in five languages including Hindi.
