RJ Balaji shuts down Karuppu delay talk; May 14 holds
Karuppu's May 14 release stands, RJ Balaji posted, killing chatter that the Suriya film would shift. Five days out, the trailer has still not landed.
Karuppu, the Suriya-led RJ Balaji film due in theatres on May 14, picked up a fresh round of release-date chatter this week, with posts on social media suggesting the date might shift because of the political uncertainty around Vijay’s swearing-in as Tamil Nadu chief minister. The director has now killed the talk in a single line.
Posting on his social handle, RJ Balaji wrote in Tamil: “சொன்ன தேதியில சொன்ன சொல்படி கருப்பன் வருவான் !!!” The line translates as Karuppan will arrive on the date promised, exactly as promised. He added a festival callback, “பட்டாசு எடுத்து வைங்க பண்டிகை வரப்போகுது”, keep the firecrackers ready, the festival is on its way. The release date stays May 14.
The political backdrop is real even if a date shift was never on the cards. Vijay takes oath as Tamil Nadu chief minister today, with the swearing-in scheduled for 11 am at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium, after Governor Rajendra Arlekar accepted TVK’s 120-MLA claim on Thursday evening. The same week Karuppu opens, the state is running on a politically charged news cycle, and there was an industry-side concern that a film hitting screens four days into a brand-new government could be drowned out by political coverage. RJ Balaji’s response is that it will not be.
Five days out, however, one piece is still missing: the trailer. The team has rolled out the audio launch in Madurai, the first single, posters, and a stretch of promotional appearances minus Trisha, who shrugged off her own absence on social media with a “lost in the mail” line. The trailer drop, traditionally the biggest single push two weeks out, has not landed. With the release barely five days away, the absence of a cut trailer leaves a noticeable gap in the build-up. The director’s denial of a delay was direct. The silence on the trailer, by contrast, is louder than usual.
