Guppy at 10: Tovino Thomas and Johnpaul George team up again
The duo behind Guppy are planning the biggest-budget film of both their careers, with Chethan Jayalal returning to complete the original trio.
A single photograph did the announcing. Tovino Thomas, director Johnpaul George and actor Chethan Jayalal, standing together in the green, marking ten years since Guppy released, and quietly confirming what the picture was really for: the three of them are making a film together again.
The scale is the headline within the headline. Industry chatter around the reunion pegs the new project as the most expensive film either Tovino or Johnpaul George has attempted, which is saying something for an actor who has already headlined a superhero film and a survival epic. No title, no other cast, no technicians yet; those announcements are expected in the coming days.
Guppy is the kind of debut both men have spent a decade being measured against. Tovino’s turn as the engineer Thejas Varkey was the performance that moved him from promising to inevitable, and the film gave Johnpaul George one of Malayalam cinema’s most affectionate directorial debuts. Chethan Jayalal, who played the title role of the boy chasing his dream of a wheelchair for his mother, completes the original trio in the new project.

The ten years since have been kind to both careers. Tovino stacked up Ennu Ninte Moideen, Theevandi, Godha, Mayanadhi, Minnal Murali and 2018, then took Ajayante Randam Moshanam to a pan-Indian audience, with Narivetta confirming this year that the ambition runs deeper than scale. Johnpaul George followed Guppy with the well-received Ambili, then crossed over to producing and backed Romancham, one of Malayalam cinema’s biggest recent sleeper hits.
That last detail matters for the new film. This is not a nostalgia-driven anniversary post; it is a reunion between an actor at his commercial peak and a director who now understands the producing side of big bets. What they build with that combination is the thing worth watching for when the full cast and crew list lands.
