Toxic's Thadumaarudhe Trades Tabaahi's Fever for Longing

Toxic has released Thadumaarudhe, its second single, and the shift in register is the point. Where Tabaahi played love as wreckage and surrender, this one turns inward: tenderness, yearning, the things two people leave unsaid. It also moves the spotlight from Kiara Advani to Tara Sutaria, whose Rebecca now gets her own chapter opposite Yash’s Raya.

The pairing plays looser than anything Toxic has shown so far. Raya is the same man audiences met in Tabaahi, but the way he loves Rebecca brings out a softer, almost carefree side of him, with the chaos he carries only hinted at underneath. For a film whose full title is A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups, the song strategy is starting to look deliberate: each single a different woman, a different shade of the same man.

Tanishk Bagchi, Arslan Nizami and Faheem Abdullah compose, and Siddharth Basrur sings the track in all five languages it ships in: Madhosh in Hindi, Manamohaka in Kannada, Manasaagadhe in Telugu, Thadumaarudhe in Tamil and MadhuMohini in Malayalam. Vignesh Shivan writes the Tamil lyrics, with Pramod Maravanthe, Arslan Nizami and Syed Murad Gilani, RamaJogaiah Sastry and Rajeev Govindan handling the other versions.

“The track captures the emotional journey of Raya and Rebecca, the love, the longing and the playful nuances of romance,” Bagchi says of reuniting with Nizami and Abdullah. Basrur puts it more bluntly: “It isn’t just about heartbreak, it’s about everything that’s left unsaid between two people. I wanted the vocals to reflect that honesty rather than just the pain.”

Geetu Mohandas directs from a script she co-wrote with Yash, and the ensemble beyond the two leads still reads like a headline: Nayanthara, Kiara Advani, Rukmini Vasanth and Huma Qureshi. Shot in Kannada and English with dubs across Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam, Toxic opens worldwide on August 26, its Tamil Nadu rights already locked in a ₹63 crore distribution deal.
