Vishwanath & Sons opens tonight, half a world early
Premiere shows in North America run hours before Tamil Nadu's dawn first-day-first-shows. Suriya's family bet, three months after Karuppu, comes due.
The Vishwanath & Sons release technically begins tonight. Premiere shows roll out across North American chains this evening, US time, which means Sanjay Vishwanath meets his first paying audience while Tamil Nadu is still asleep. The home crowd follows at dawn: first-day-first-shows here begin in the early hours of Friday, with the Tamil and Telugu versions opening together worldwide on August 14.
The advance picture is harder to read than the campaign’s confidence suggests. Trade chatter on Thursday put the worldwide advance in the region of Rs 10 crore, with overseas contributing a healthy slice of it, though no official territory-wise numbers have been published. Tamil Nadu’s own window has run compressed: counters opened only Tuesday evening, later than usual for a release this size, with terms between distributors and theatres taking time to settle. The final 48 hours of selling have leaned on occasion rather than urgency, and the closing poster makes the point plainly: Suriya in a brown suit, alone in front of a packed auditorium, under the words grand release.

What is locked: a 161-minute cut, a campaign that never once raised its voice until the bookings poster handed Suriya a lathi, and a release date that gives the film the entire Independence Day weekend to find the families it was made for. Three months ago Karuppu opened to the biggest numbers of Suriya’s career; whatever Friday brings, this is the rare release week where his opening-day crowd and his target audience may be two different rooms.
In Tamil Nadu the first shows begin before sunrise. In New Jersey and Texas, Sanjay Vishwanath arrives tonight.
