Moodar Koodam 2 first look: a teddy bear leads Mission Possible

Thirteen years is a long time to sit on a sequel, and Moodar Koodam 2 has clearly spent it acquiring passports. Naveen Hidhayath’s 2013 dark comedy, the kind of film that found its real audience long after leaving theatres, is officially back, and the first look announces the new scale with a straight face it cannot quite hold. The subtitle is Mission: Possible.

The reveal comes as a pair of posters. In the first, four armed men stand in falling snow, weapons ready, jaws set for something serious, except that leading the formation is a teddy bear in a red knit cap, pistol in paw, the words Happy Life stitched across its heart.

The second poster stops pretending altogether: the same bear sprints down a burning city street with the gang at its heels, cars cartwheeling overhead and a Tyrannosaurus rex closing in behind. Whatever this mission is, it has escalated.

Naveen Hidhayath, who writes and directs again, says the long gap was deliberate. “I never wanted to return merely for the sake of continuing the franchise. I wanted a story that could surprise audiences once again while staying true to the soul of the original.” The sequel folds the original’s irreverent humour into action and fantasy on an international canvas: the shoot has covered Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Croatia and Slovenia, plus the landscapes of Kazakhstan, and the animation and visual effects are being handled by a US-based team with Hollywood studio credits, working with VFX supervisor K.A. Batcha.

Naveen leads the ensemble alongside Oviya, with Senrayan, Rajaji, Kuberan and Jayaprakash in key roles. Kamal Bohra and Samkit Bohra produce under Grandel Pictures, calling the film less a sequel than an elevation of a franchise that arrives carrying its audience’s protectiveness. Sooraj Nallusami shoots it, Amrish composes the songs with Natarajan Sankaran on the background score, and Athiappan Siva edits. More reveals are promised over the coming months, and if the posters are the baseline, the reveals have a high bar for strangeness.
