Jiiva's Thagappan first look sets a courthouse scene

The first look of Thagappan puts its whole pitch in one frame. Jiiva in a plain white shirt, a young boy in a checked shirt beside him, both parked on a bench outside the Madurai District Court, a glass of chai steaming at the edge of the image while lawyers stream through the gate behind them. The father-son drama announces itself without a single line of copy, though the courthouse setting quietly suggests the film has more on its mind than affection.

The poster lands with real momentum behind it. Thagappan went to floors in Madurai in late July as a single continuous schedule, and the unit has already crossed the halfway mark on the shoot. The team says onlookers who watched scenes being filmed came away visibly moved, the kind of set report every family drama wants circulating. A December theatrical release is the plan.

Written and directed by Ra. Venkat of Kida, the film is set in Madurai and its surrounding belt, built on the father-son bond and family ties. It is Jiiva’s first fully rural-rooted film since Thenavattu, and it follows the success of TTT, which makes the timing of a Madurai-soil story rather deliberate. Rajisha Vijayan plays the female lead.

The soundtrack is with Marshall Robinson, an independent musician who has worked alongside composers including Anirudh, and Think Music holds the audio rights. K. Kumar produces for Lark Studios, with M. Sukumar on camera, Nagooran Ramachandran editing and K.B. Nandhabalan on production design. On this evidence, Lark’s bet is that the quietest poster of the season might belong to its loudest crowd-pleaser.
