Vishwanath & Sons: Suriya trades the aruval for a milk bottle

Venky Atluri's family drama heads into the Independence Day weekend with Tamil Nadu counters opening Tuesday at 6 pm, three days ahead of the August 14 release.

Autumn leaves, soft light and a leading man who mostly smiles: the campaign has been selling calm all the way into release week.

Tamil Nadu bookings for Vishwanath & Sons open on Tuesday at 6 pm, three days before the film reaches screens worldwide on August 14. The counters open on the back of a promotional run that has been unusually sure of what it is selling: not scale, not action, but Suriya in soft light, going after the family audience Tamil cinema keeps insisting it lost to television.

He plays Sanjay Vishwanath, an international pistol shooter still competing, and still chasing the podium, well into his 40s. The trailer builds the film around everything except the sport: domestic chaos, an autumn-toned romance with Mamitha Baiju, and the register Suriya set back in March when he announced the title with the line “love with a difference, family with a purpose.”

Around him is a cast built for exactly this pitch. Mamitha Baiju brings the goodwill of Premalu to her biggest Tamil role yet, while Radhika Sarathkumar and Raveena Tandon anchor the household, Tandon returning to Tamil cinema after more than two decades. Venky Atluri, coming off Lucky Baskhar, directs his first fully Tamil production, with G. V. Prakash Kumar scoring; the Pattampoochi single already sketched the film’s warm, unhurried palette, and Nimish Ravi’s camera keeps the trailer in the same golden hour.

The stakes sit in the contrast. This is Suriya’s first release since Karuppu, the RJ Balaji film that crossed Rs 161 crore in five days in May to become his highest-grossing film ever. Nobody doubts he can open a film right now; the question is whether the crowd that queued for the aruval queues for a milk bottle. The team has been betting yes since Suriya took the film home to Coimbatore earlier this month, and the trailer’s confidence suggests the film knows its lane and likes it.

Bookings open across Tamil Nadu on Tuesday, August 11 at 6 pm. The film opens worldwide on Friday, August 14, going into the Independence Day weekend.
