Karuppu lands 9 AM first shows under new CM Vijay

Tamil Nadu rarely clears early-morning shows. The new CM does it for Suriya's release; the makers reply with a poster that doubles as a Vijay-fan ad.

From Team Suriya, with love: a poster that frames the new chief minister exactly like a Karuppu first-look.

Tamil Nadu’s new chief minister has signed off on 9 AM first shows for Karuppu on May 14 and 15, the kind of early-morning slot the state has not cleared for a star release in years. Dream Warrior Pictures and Sakthi Film Factory put out the announcement on Tuesday evening, alongside a poster captioned “From Team Suriya” that thanks the chief minister of Tamil Nadu.

Tamil Nadu has held the line against the early-morning shows that are routine in the Telugu and Hindi markets, citing the law-and-order load around big-star openings. The previous government kept the standard 10 AM start for releases of every size, including Coolie, Thug Life, and Beast. A 9 AM clearance is a small thing on paper, but it sets a marker; the next Rajini, Kamal, or Ajith opening will pull this poster up and ask for the same courtesy.

The poster itself is the colour. Instead of a generic text card, the studio cut a still of Vijay at the chief minister’s desk: tricolour at his side, the Tamil nameplate centred, a pen mid-signature. The film’s logo and “From Team Suriya” sit bottom-right, framed exactly like a Karuppu first-look.

The not-very-quiet reading is that this poster has two audiences, and only one of them is being thanked. It also pins Vijay’s face to a Suriya release the day before it opens, which is the lowest-cost way to swing a slice of the largest fanbase in Tamil cinema over to a Karuppu ticket on opening weekend. RJ Balaji, who writes and directs the film, has been an open Vijay supporter through the actor’s political run; the studio knew exactly which photograph to pick. The 9 AM courtesy is the news. The poster is an ad.

The number behind the push: Karuppu’s opening-day pre-sales had crossed Rs 1.90 crore in Tamil Nadu within 36 hours of bookings opening, with all-India real-time advances at roughly Rs 2.34 crore by the morning of May 12. Box-office tracker Jerin Georgekutty flagged the trade pressure the same day: only 1,409 shows had opened against what he called a minimum of 2,000 needed by Tuesday itself, and at that pace, he warned, the full pre-sales window would close below Rs 5 crore unless distribution shifted gear.

The 9 AM clearance is partly the answer to that bottleneck: extra screens before the regular 10 AM block kicks in. Karuppu opens nationwide on May 14, with Suriya in the lead, Trisha opposite him, and Indrans, Natty Subramaniam, Swasika, and Sshivada in the supporting bench. R. Madhavan amplified the trailer on his social channels earlier this week. Its Madurai audio launch earlier this month went out without Trisha, who said her invite had not reached her in time. By Friday morning the 9 AM experiment will have a number attached to it. The poster, harder to measure, will have already done its job.
