Stand-up comedian and Bigg Boss Tamil alumnus Vikkals Vikram is stepping into a lead role for the first time, with his film’s title revealed as Lightweight Baby in Chennai. Directed by Bengaluru-based debutant KC Guru and co-starring fitness model Aarthi Krishna in her first feature, the romantic comedy builds its premise around a stand-up comedian and a female bodybuilder. Vikram, true to form, turned the entire reveal into a stand-up set.

The joke was also the point. Usually the hero praises the director and the director praises the hero, Vikram told the room. He had only recently met KC Guru, he said, and when he asked the director what they were going to say on stage, Guru told him there was nothing to say. So they turned the event into a stand-up show. The detail is not incidental. The film’s own central conceit leans on the comedy-club form, and Vikram’s digital fame is built on parody, reels and the quick-turn rhythms of short-form video.

The ten-year arc behind this moment was the throughline Vikram kept returning to. He started as a theatre artist in 2016, drifted into short-form video with friends out of a shared bedroom, and watched a reel built around the song Nilavai Kondu Vaa cross a million views in hours. SJ Suryah and Simran posted about it. Music composer Deva phoned him personally to thank him for bringing the song back into circulation. That, Vikram said, was the moment his father first realised his son could act. Until then, his father mostly remembered him as the boy who skipped college classes.

Bigg Boss amplified the shift. Before the show, he said, fans recognised him as content and showed affection without knowing his name. After the show, he had become a household child to audiences. That is the power of Bigg Boss he did not see coming, he said. People felt free to stop him on the street and ask what he was doing next, the way a relative would. He added, characteristically, that he enjoys the intrusion.

The hero offer came through an Instagram message. Vikram assumed it meant a short film or a pilot. It turned out to be a feature. The opportunity, he said, arrived from a dream he was too embarrassed to say out loud in 2016, when the thought of calling himself a hero felt ridiculous. A dream he could not even say out loud is becoming real in front of him today, he said.

The film’s title, Lightweight Baby, places a microphone stand in the frame with a weight at the other end. One side of the design carries a weightlifting motif, the other a comedian’s mic. The story, Vikram said, is a love story between a stand-up comedian and a female bodybuilder, and that is why he could plausibly play the hero. What is more interesting than the title, he added, is the heroine.

KC Guru, speaking in English, unpacked the visual. Lightweight Baby is about an imbalancing life, he said. One side of the poster carries low weight, the other side carries high. The film is the answer to why that is. The director is from Bengaluru and told the room he understands Tamil but does not speak it, a small acknowledgement that landed well.

Aarthi Krishna, stepping into her first film after a modelling career, kept her remarks short. She thanked the director and producer for trusting her with a debut role and said she was curious to see how the film would take shape. Pramod Kotian is the cinematographer and Saravanan Subramanian is composing the score. The film is produced by Hitha Studios, with Sagar Sandesh and G. Thimma Reddy co-producing.
