John Doe first look: Arjun Das takes his first cop role
Madhumita's psychological crime thriller follows a search for an identity that could belong to a victim, a killer or a child who has gone missing.
John Doe’s first look introduces Arjun Das as Chandru, a police officer drawn into a psychological crime thriller directed by Madhumita. The film marks his first role in police uniform and is produced by Shobu Yarlagadda and Prasad Devineni under Arka Mediaworks.
The red-and-black character poster combines a close-up of Chandru with an image of him riding a motorcycle in uniform. For Arjun, seen earlier this year in Con City, the role brings an investigation that is as much about the questions troubling the officer as the identity he is trying to uncover.
Madhumita, who has co-written the story and screenplay with Nicholas Chevaillier, describes the film through the uncertainty around its title character. “Who is John Doe? A victim? A murderer? A missing child? Or someone who has never been found?” she asks.
As Chandru looks for answers, the boundary between what is known and what is believed begins to blur. The director says another question gradually becomes more unsettling to him: “What if no one is ready to face the truth about John Doe?” She describes a screenplay designed to keep the answers from being easily anticipated.
Arjun’s own introduction to Chandru adds a note of self-doubt. In his first-look announcement, he wrote “Naan podhuma?”, meaning “Am I enough?”, as the question haunting the character. “Somewhere in his search, I found a little of myself too,” he added.
The cast also includes Sanchana Natarajan, Srushti, Zaara Vineet Chandhoke and Neerav. Preetha Jayaraman handles cinematography, with Mujeeb Majeed composing the music and The Artist 404 providing additional music. Vijay Venkataramanan edits the film, while Ashwini Kale is the production designer.
Arjun’s announcement confirms that John Doe is headed for a theatrical release in November.
