Baththa: Vijay Sethupathi goes retro for October 1

Baththa, Vijay Sethupathi’s new film with director Balaji Tharaneetharan, will release in theatres worldwide on October 1. Star Studio18 and Atlee present the film, with A for Apple Studios and Cine1 Studios producing.

The date announcement poster goes full retro: a hand-painted Sethupathi in slim sunglasses, cigar smoking, collar blazing orange, while a small boy runs across the bottom corner of the frame. It is a combination that invites a second look, which is usually the point with this director.

The real draw is the reunion. Baththa is the third film between Sethupathi and Balaji Tharaneetharan, after Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaanom, still one of the most loved comedies of its decade, and Seethakathi, one of the strangest and most ambitious star vehicles Tamil cinema has attempted. Whatever this pairing does, it has never done the expected thing, and that track record is the film’s best advertisement.

Around them, the packaging is very 2026. Atlee, who directed Sethupathi as Jawan’s antagonist, moves to the presenter’s chair for a Tamil film with him in the lead. Sai Abhyankkar, the youngest composer with a legitimate claim on the youth playlist, scores. Lijomol Jose of Jai Bhim plays the female lead. Selvakumar SK shoots, R. Kalaivanan edits and T. Muthuraj handles production design, with Murad Khetani, Priya Atlee, Alok Jain and Ajit Andhare producing and Ashwin Murugan co-producing.

Sethupathi’s release calendar is filling from both ends, with Slum Dog: 33 Temple Road building its pan-India rollout on one side and Baththa now holding October 1 on the other.
